Sthiram means stable. How can we define Sthiram? What is a Sthiram position? Is there a degree or level to achieve 100% Sthiram?
To reach Sthiram, we don’t actually have to do anything because humans have inbuilt capabilities. However, it varies from person to person. Some people reach this state of mind by birth, while others achieve it through certain practices, or Sadhana.
For example, when we observe a mother elephant, she can sense all aspects—touch, smell, movement, sound, and visual spectrum—so clearly because she is aware 24/7. She is silent, calm, and all her senses are stable, allowing her to sense any danger to protect her herd. Similarly, humans also have the same ability to sense, but these abilities are only active when we are in a Sthiram state.
How can we recognize that we are stable?
Once you are in a Sthiram position, you will be aware of everything in your surroundings at a micro level. You will enjoy and appreciate every life around you. This state normally happens in our daily life, but that awareness lasts only for a few seconds because our minds are occupied with so many thoughts. We are always living in some thoughts, thinking about something, and are not aware of our surroundings. This may be called unconscious or subconscious behavior.
Consider driving a car. Often, we drive on “autopilot,” not fully aware of our actions because we have already written the “software” for driving. We drive with open eyes, but if something suddenly crosses our path, we become aware and come to a conscious level. If you already know how to control your car, you will handle the situation. But if you are not aware of the situation, you may not be able to protect yourself.
Driving can also be an opportunity to practice mindfulness. By focusing on the present moment—observing the road, feeling the steering wheel, and being aware of your surroundings—you can enhance your state of Sthiram.
Sthiram can also be achieved through various mindful practices such as dancing, learning music, singing, playing musical instruments, painting, sculpting, or carpentry. Any practice that involves consistent awareness can help you reach a state of Sthiram. However, yoga is the best foundational practice that can open your perspective and make your Sthiram position more productive.
