Sadhana means practice. Before we begin our Sadhana, we must determine our choices and decide what we want in life. This is called Sankalpa. Once we have a strong determination about our Sankalpa, we are ready for Sadhana.
In the wild, when we observe a young leopard practicing hunting, it is so focused because it understands that hunger sustains life. It practices relentlessly, no matter how hard it is, and never gives up for any reason because it has decided its Sankalpa. Only then does life experience happen.
For example, my Sankalpa is to cook dinner for myself at home and eat before 7 PM. Additionally, I want to learn to sing every morning. Now that I have decided on my Sankalpa, it is time for Sadhana (practice).
The journey of Sadhana will define your character.
We should not force practices that we are not capable of; instead, we should enjoy the practice every day. Day by day, you will experience something new that will open your perspective. Slowly, you will gain experience that may lead you to become a professional or a guru who helps others. However, every individual’s practice experience will be unique, and we should not compare them.
There are general ethical values that will determine your growth. For example, how you learn, where you learn, and how dedicated and disciplined you are in your practice will define your level of achievement.
“Only a disciplined person is a free person. So-called freedom is only a license to act and do as we like. Yoga is meant to train and discipline the worries and anxieties of men and women.” — Yogācārya B. K. S. Iyengar
